Gas Station Fuel System
Gas Station Fuel System
The evolution of this gas station and convenience store chain’s fuel management systems and processes is a strong example of how the company continues to challenge the status quo—leveraging data, technology, and its partnership with Smart Building Technologies (SmartBT) to do so.
A typical fuel store has numerous tanks with several blends of fuel that must be centrally and remotely managed. The client’s challenge to SmartBT was to minimize latency in their existing system to more effectively manage fuel inventory—specifically, to reduce the time required to obtain tank level status updates. Previously, it took several hours to receive these updates through their automated systems and processes. This delay impacted the client’s ability to manage the high volumes of fuel inventory required to sustain customer demand on a daily, or even hourly, basis.
Because of these limitations, the client’s Fuel Management team needed to maintain excess fuel within the supply chain—both in each store’s tanks and delivery inventories—to ensure that stores would never run out of fuel. This equated to significant inefficiencies across more than 1,075 fuel sites.
Our Solution
SmartBT worked closely with the client’s Fuel Management and Building Automation System (BAS) / Internet of Things (IoT) teams to develop an optimized solution. SmartBT’s design enhancements and communication protocol development reduced tank level status update times from hours to minutes.
The client’s Fuel Management team can now view near real-time fuel levels for all tanks at each site. In addition, SmartBT designed and implemented a tank low-level alarm system that allows the team to set threshold levels for each tank. When a tank reaches its set threshold, an automatic email alert is sent to the management team.
These timely updates have provided the client with significant savings and operational flexibility, enabling true just-in-time fuel management across all locations.
